We’re Screwed! – Palestinian-Jordanian Dialect Samer and his friend Rami were driving back from an outing when Samer insisted on taking a shortcut through a small road he wasn’t familiar with. Rami told him: — Come on, man! Let’s stick to the main road. We don’t want to get lost! Samer replied confidently: — Just trust me! I know a shortcut that’ll save us half an hour! They took the road, and five minutes later, they found themselves in the middle of a dirt track, with no streetlights or houses in sight. Suddenly, the car stopped! Rami looked at Samer: — What happened?! Samer tried starting the engine once, then twice, but nothing worked. They got out of the car and discovered that they’d forgotten to fill up the tank! Rami grabbed his head and said: — No fuel, no idea where we are, and my phone’s at one percent! Samer checked his phone. It was completely dead. They stood there silently for a moment before Rami finally said: — Congratulations, genius… We’re screwed! Samer replied: — Okay, now’s not the time to blame anyone. Let’s find a solution! Rami: — A solution? Start walking! Maybe we’ll find a gas station before sunrise! Expression Meaning: أكلنا هوا Literally: We ate air. A Palestinian-Jordanian expression used when we find ourselves in serious trouble or a difficult situation and feel like there’s no easy way out. Natural English equivalents include We’re screwed!, We’re in deep trouble!, or We’re done for!
