His Hand Has a Hole-Syrian Dialect In one of the alleys of old Damascus, there lived a young man named Samer, but the entire neighborhood called him "Abu Eed Mabkhousha" (The One with the Hole in His Hand) because he spent so much money. To him, money was like water between fingers—it passed right through and never stayed! Samer worked at a fabric shop and earned an excellent salary at the beginning of every month. But as soon as he received his pay, he would start hosting feasts, buying things, getting new clothes, giving gifts left and right, and spending his nights at restaurants and outings. Days and years passed, and his friends and peers began building houses and buying land, while he was still living in a rented apartment, not even owning the title deed (tabo) for a single small room! One day, his wise and elderly neighbor, Abu Abdo, sat with him at a café and began advising him, saying: "My son Samer, time is flying by, and you still don't have a house to shelter you, nor land in your name, nor a white penny for a rainy day! What on earth are you doing with your money?!" Samer (laughing and puffing on his waterpipe): "Uncle Abu Abdo, you only live once, and God is the provider! Tomorrow things will work out, and money comes and goes!" Abu Abdo (clapping his hands together in disbelief): "My son, your hand has a hole in it! The penny that comes into your hand vanishes immediately! Tomorrow when you grow old and find not a single piece of property in your name to lean your back on, then you'll know the hard truth!" Days passed, and suddenly his landlord decided to sell the house. Samer found himself in a frantic mess with not a single franc to protect him or buy a small house. He started running around to people asking for loans, but everyone avoided him, saying: "This Samer has a hole in his hand; even if he were given the wealth of Qarun, he would spend it in two days and fail to secure any property for himself!"
