Turned His Back and Forgot His Origin In a village among the Chouf mountains, "Abu Elias" was a hardworking man who spent his entire life toiling and struggling to raise his only son, "Samr," and send him to Beirut to study and become a doctor. Unfortunately, as soon as Samr settled into life in Beirut and made new friends, he turned his back on his father and his people, forgetting the sweat and hardship of the man who scraped by to pay for his education. Every time he returned to the village for the holidays, he spoke with condescension and looked down on everyone. He even turned his back on his old friends, acting too proud to greet them on the street. Abu Elias kept sending him money and looking after him, while Samr was busy with his late-night outings and showing off. One night, Samr got into a major trouble with some shady business characters who scammed him and stole all the money he had saved for his graduation project. When things got tight and he turned to his new, superficial friends for help, they all turned their backs on him and even avoided answering his phone calls! Shocked and humbled, Samr had no choice but to return to his father's house, heartbroken and ashamed. He knocked on the door, and his father opened it, his eyes full of tenderness. He pulled Samr into his arms as if nothing had happened, and said to him calmly: "My son, a human being without roots is like a tree without them; the first gust of wind will uproot them. Fair-weather friends turn their backs when times get tough, but your home and your people are the only ones who open their hearts before their doors." Samr felt deep remorse. He went back, lowered his head, and started working the land with his father, realizing fully that: "Whoever turns their back on their origin, loses themselves in the end."
