Every Sheep is Hung by Its Own Belly... My friend, listen to this story. In a market of Sana'a, "Uncle Saleh" was a merchant who owned a large shop for fabrics and goods. He had two sons: the first, "Saleh," was a hardworking young man who worked tirelessly and helped his father in the shop; the second, "Marwan," was a negligent youth whose only concern was wandering the streets and keeping bad company. Uncle Saleh always defended Marwan, saying: "People, be patient with him; tomorrow he will grow up and use his mind." But people advised him: "Uncle Saleh, let the boy bear the consequences of his actions. Stop covering for him." One day, Marwan got tangled up in a heavy and serious debt with one of the big merchants in the market, and all the merchants came to demand that Uncle Saleh pay his son's debt, saying: "You are his father and you are responsible!" Uncle Saleh was distressed, and the world closed in on him. He began complaining to the people, saying: "What is my fault that I should bear the debts of all the neighborhood's kids?" One of the neighborhood's elders—a wise man with years of experience—stopped him and said a word that shook the entire market: "Uncle Saleh, do not carry what you cannot bear! 'Every sheep is hung by its own belly'; the boy has grown up and become a man, so let each person bear the result of their mistakes and pay off their debt with their own hands. Do not harm yourself for someone who couldn't handle responsibility." Uncle Saleh understood the lesson and decided to stop supporting Marwan, leaving him to face his mistake, work, and pay off his debt himself. Ever since that day, this saying became a proverb used by Yemenis whenever someone tries to make others responsible for their actions!
