كان في شبِّين صحاب، سامر و حَمَد، بس شخصياتهم كانت مختلفة كتير. سامر كان وين ما بيقعد، بيضحك النّاس و بيسلّيهم و بيحب يحكي نُكَت، وحتى إذا صار موقف محرج، بيعرف كيف يخفِّف الجو. مرة كانوا قاعدين عند صاحبهم، و انكبّت القهوة على الطاولة. سامر ضحك وقال: الحمد لله إنها عالطاولة، مش عالبدلة… كنت رح أطلب منكم مصاري حَقْها! الكل ضحك. مروان كان قاعد ساكت، وبعدين قال: — شو اللي بيضحِّك بالله؟ سامر رد: — ولا إشي، بس بنحاول نعيش… يعني النكد شو جايبلك أحسن منّا بعد شوي، مروان بلّش يحكي قصة طويلة، وكل شوي بيقاطع الناس و بيعيد نفس الحكي. الكل صار يطْلَّع بالساعة و نفسهم يسكت. لما طِلعُو من عند صاحبهم، قال سامر: — مروان، شو قصتك اليوم بالِع راديو؟. مروان قال: — ليش؟ أنا حكيت كثير! ضحك سامر وقال: — هاي هي المشكلة… دمك ثقيل وما بتحس! مروان ضحك وقال: — وإنت؟ — أنا؟ دمي خفيف، بعرف متى أمزح ومتى أسكت. "دمّه خفيف" يعني الشخص اللي بيعرف يحكي و لطيف و بنحب نسمع كلامه و القعدة حلوة معه و ما بتنزَهَق.،،،، أمّا "دمه ثقيل" يعني ما بيعرف يحكي و لا يمزح و بيرمي الكلام رمي و لو حاول يخفّف دم ما بيزبط معه
Lighthearted and Heavy-Going — Palestinian-Jordanian Dialect There were two friends, Samer and Hamed, but their personalities were very different. Wherever Samer sat, he would make people laugh and keep them entertained. He loved telling jokes, and even when an awkward situation happened, he knew how to lighten the mood. One day, they were sitting at a friend’s house when some coffee spilled on the table. Samer laughed and said: — Thank God it spilled on the table, not on my suit… I was about to ask you guys to pay for it! Everyone laughed. Marwan was sitting quietly, then suddenly said: — What’s so funny, anyway? Samer replied: — Nothing, we’re just trying to enjoy ourselves… I mean, what does being miserable get you that we don’t have? A little later, Marwan started telling a long story. He kept interrupting people and repeating the same things. Everyone started checking the time, hoping he would finally stop talking. When they left their friend’s house, Samer said: — Marwan, what’s gotten into you today? You’ve been going on like a radio! Marwan said: — Why? I talked a lot! Samer laughed and said: — That’s exactly the problem… you’re so heavy-going, and you don’t even realize it! Marwan laughed and asked: — And you? — Me? I’m lighthearted. I know when to joke and when to stop. “His blood is light” describes someone who is pleasant, knows how to talk and entertain people, and whose company is enjoyable and never boring. “His blood is heavy” describes someone who doesn’t know how to talk or joke naturally, keeps throwing out awkward comments, and even when they try to be funny, it just doesn’t work.
