The Stray Goat Is Followed by the Stray Billy Goat — Palestinian-Jordanian Dialect Every day, Layan would leave university and sit with her friends for a while at the little neighborhood shop before heading home. There was a young man named Mazen who, whenever he saw her, would take the same route and walk behind her. One day, Abu Nasser, the shopkeeper, saw them and said: — Guys, what’s this guy’s story? He’s behind Layan every day! Umm Nasser replied: — Well, he’s the one at fault. What does he want with her? A little later, Umm Nasser saw them again, but she noticed that whenever Layan saw Mazen standing there, she would start laughing and talking to him, and sometimes she would even wait for him before leaving. She said to Abu Nasser: — Wait a minute… Looks like the story isn’t what I thought. They’re both responsible. The next day, Mazen passed through the neighborhood while Layan was standing at the door. As soon as she saw him, she smiled and said: — Where have you been? You took so long today! Abu Nasser heard her, nodded his head, and said: — Ah, now we understand! Umm Nasser laughed and said: — The stray goat is followed by the stray billy goat. Meaning: “The stray goat is followed by the stray billy goat” is said when people see a young man following a girl, or when a girl behaves in a way that encourages the young man to follow her. It means that both of them share some responsibility, rather than blaming only the young man. It is a derogatory and insulting expression, not something said as a joke.
