في قرية يمنية، كان عايش واحد اسمه حمود. حمود متزوج حرمة شاطرة بالطبخ، وفي يوم كان عندهم عزومة لضيوف كبار بالبيت، وجهزت الحرمة شوربة ومداح. وهي تسكب الأكل، بالغلط انكب ملح واجد فوق طاسة الشوربة! الحرمة انصدمت وصارت تصك وجهها و تبكي: "يا فضيحتي، الضيوف على الباب والشوربة مالحـة كأنها بحر!". وهون دخلت عمتها (أم زوجها)، وقالت لها بصوت عالي: "يا بنت، بطلي صياح، أنا أصلحها لك، شوفي الشطارة!". بدل ما العجوز تروح تجيب بطاطس تمتص الملح أو تخففها بمرقة ثانية، راحت جابت علبة فلفل أحمر حار وكمون، و كبّته كله فوق الشوربة عشان تغطي طعم الملح! وفوق كذا، صبت كمان شوية خل، وفكرت حالها هيك حلتها. لما حطوا الصحن للضيوف، أول ما مد الشيخ ملعقته يذوق الشوربة، طلع نار وحراق وملح وثقل لدرجة إنه كاد يشرق ودمعت عيونه وقعد يكح بقوة! لما شاف حمود اللي صار، التفت على أمه وقال بحسرة: "يا أمه، جيتي تزيّنها عمتها... عَمّيتيها وزدتي الطين بلة!". ومن يومها، صارت هذي الكلمة مثل يقولوه اليمنيين لكل شخص يتدخل يصلح شغلة، فيخربها زيادة!
Yemeni Proverb Story: "She came to adorn it, but she blinded it]" In a Yemeni village, there lived a man named Saleh. Saleh was married to a woman who was usually great at cooking, and one day they were hosting important guests at their house, so she prepared soup and traditional dishes. While she was serving the food, a large amount of salt accidentally spilled right into the main bowl of soup meant for the VIP guests! The woman panicked, slapped her face, and started crying, saying: *"Oh, what a disgrace! The guests are at the door, and the soup is as salty as the sea!"* Just then, her mother-in-law walked in—an old woman with a sharp tongue who always wanted to act like the boss. She said to her loudly: *"Oh girl, stop crying, I will fix this right now, watch how it's done!"* Instead of fixing it properly—like adding raw potatoes to absorb the salt or diluting it with fresh broth—the old woman went and grabbed a whole container of hot red pepper and cumin, dumping it all on top of the soup to cover up the salt! On top of that, she poured in some vinegar, thinking she had just saved the day. When they placed the dish before the guests, the elder sheikh scooped a spoonful and tasted the soup. It was a fiery explosion of spicy, salty, and sour flavors, making him choke, tear up, and cough violently! When Saleh saw what happened, he turned to his mother and said with heartbreak: *"Mother, you came to adorn it... instead, you made it completely blind and made things even worse!"* Ever since that day, this phrase became a popular proverb used by Yemenis whenever someone tries to fix a problem, but ends up ruining it even more!
