في قرية يمنية جبلية تحيط بها المدرجات الزراعية الخضراء، كان عايش واحد اسمه عُثمان. عثمان كان زلمي الله مهديه، معه قرشين مدخرين من تعب سفره وغربته، وعايش عيشة مستورة ومرتاحة ببيته. لكن عثمان كان فيه طبع: يحب الفشخرة ويحب يملك شغلات غريبة بس عشان يقولوا الناس عنه "صاحب مشاريع". في يوم من الأيام، نزل على سوق القرية، وكان فيه واحد بائع داهية جاي من بلاد بعيدة، عارض "حمار" شكله قوي بس بالصراحة كان شرس وعنيد وما حدا طايقه. صار البائع يمدح بالحمار ويقول: "هذا وحش في العمل، صبور وما يتعب!". عثمان، من طمعه وحبه للمظاهر، طلع الفلوس اللي جَمّعها بعمره كله، واشترى الحمار ودفع حقه كامل مرتاح! رجع عثمان على بيته فرحان وقايل أنا خلاص طوّرْت شغلي. بس من أول يوم، بلشت المصايب! الحمار ما رضى يشتغل، وكل ما اقترب منه عثمان يرفسه ويخرب السواقي ويكسر الحجار. وفوق كذا، صار عثمان كل يوم يشتري له شعير وعلف غالي وهو ما بيستفيد منه بشي، بل صار عثمان ينام الليل وهو ينوح من عضه ورفسه. صار الحمار مثل الكابوس اللي ما بينفك عنه، وصرف عليه أضعاف تمنه على الأدوية وإصلاح الخراب اللي يسويه. لما شافوه أهل القرية كيف اتبهدل وصار يحمل همّ فوق همّه، ضحكوا وقالوا: * "والله يا عثمان، لا ضاع حلالك ولا سلمت.. أنت اللي اشتريت بحلالك علّة!". ومن يومها، صارت هذي العبارة مثلاً يُضرب لكل شخص يجيب لنفسه المشاكل والمتاعب باختياره وبفلوسه!
Yemeni Proverb Story: "He bought his own trouble with his own money" In a mountainous Yemeni village surrounded by green agricultural terraces, there lived a man named Othman. Othman was a God-fearing, humble man who had a few savings put aside from the hardship of his travel and life abroad, living a modest and comfortable life in his home. However, Othman had a habit: he loved to show off and desired to own strange things just so people would call him a "man of projects." One day, he went down to the village market, where a cunning merchant from a distant land was displaying a "donkey" that looked strong, but in truth, was fierce, stubborn, and disliked by everyone. The merchant began praising the donkey, saying: "This beast is a monster at work, patient, and never gets tired!" Out of greed and a love for appearances, Othman pulled out the money he had saved his entire life, bought the donkey, and paid its full price quite happily! Othman returned home joyful, saying to himself, "I have finally advanced my work." But from the very first day, the troubles began! The donkey refused to work, and every time Othman approached it, it would kick him, wreck the irrigation channels, and break the stones. On top of that, Othman had to buy it expensive barley and fodder every day without getting any benefit from it; instead, Othman began spending his nights groaning from its bites and kicks. The donkey became like an inescapable nightmare, and Othman spent multiples of its price on medicine and repairing the mess it made. When the villagers saw how miserable he had become and how he brought troubles upon troubles upon himself, they laughed and said: "By God, Othman, you neither saved your wealth nor kept safe... You are the one who bought your own trouble with your very own money!" Ever since that day, this phrase became a proverb used for anyone who chooses to bring problems and troubles upon themselves with their own money!
