The Broken Mirror There was once a boy named Adam who loved looking at himself in the large mirror in his parents’ room. The mirror was beautiful and old, and his mother always told him: “Adam, be careful when you play near it.” One day, Adam was playing with a ball inside the house, even though his mother had asked him to play in the garden. Adam kicked the ball hard… Crash! The ball hit the mirror, and it fell to the ground and shattered. Adam froze in his place. He looked at the pieces of the mirror scattered across the floor and felt afraid. He said to himself: “If I tell my mother, she will be angry with me!” So he quickly gathered the larger pieces and tried to hide them under the bed. But throughout the day, Adam could not feel at ease. When he sat down to eat, he remembered the mirror. When he played with his friends, he remembered the mirror. And before going to sleep, he felt as though his heart was heavier than the schoolbag he carried to school. The next morning, his mother entered the room. She saw the empty space where the mirror had been, then looked at Adam. She asked him calmly: “Adam… do you know what happened to the mirror?” Adam lowered his head. He could have lied… But he felt that the fear inside him had become greater than his fear of his mother’s anger. He took a deep breath and said: “I broke it, Mom… I was playing with the ball inside the house, and I was afraid to tell you.” His mother looked at him for a moment, then sat beside him. She said: “I am sad because you were not careful, but I am happy because you told the truth.” Adam raised his head in surprise. His mother smiled and said: “We can buy another mirror, but when we break someone’s trust, it can be much harder to repair.” Adam felt as though a huge stone had been lifted from his heart. From that day on, whenever he made a mistake, he sometimes still felt afraid… But he remembered that a mistake can be fixed, while a lie can make the mistake even bigger. The Lesson: We all make mistakes, but true courage is not hiding our mistakes. It is admitting them and trying to make things right.
