“Whoever Leaves His Own Home Loses His Worth” (Palestinian–Jordanian dialect proverb) There was a young man named Mahmoud. One day, an old friend called him and said, “We’re having a dinner gathering today… you have to come. It won’t be the same without you.” At first, Mahmoud politely declined because he was comfortable at home and wasn’t the type who liked visiting people often. But his friend kept insisting until Mahmoud finally agreed. When he arrived, he greeted everyone. Then he sat by himself. No one invited him to sit with them. When the food was served, everyone started eating, but no one even said, “Come on, help yourself.” Mahmoud sat there quietly, feeling awkward, just looking around. After a few minutes, he stood up and said, “Excuse me… I just remembered I have something I need to take care of.” He left feeling disappointed. On his way home, his neighbor saw him and asked, “The dinner finished that quickly?” Mahmoud sighed and replied, “What can I say… whoever leaves his own home loses his worth.” Because staying comfortably at home would have been much better than going somewhere where he wasn’t welcomed or appreciated. Meaning of the proverb “Whoever leaves his own home loses his worth” is said when someone goes to a dinner invitation, a visit, or another gathering, only to find that they are not treated with the respect, hospitality, or appreciation they expected. They end up regretting leaving the comfort of their own home in the first place.
