“The One Who Brings It on Themselves Deserves What They Get” (Palestinian–Jordanian dialect proverb) There was a young woman named Dana who worked in an office. Every day, she arrived late to work and always had a different excuse. One day it was traffic. Another day, her alarm didn’t go off. Another time, she claimed her car had broken down. Her manager warned her more than once: “If you keep coming in late, I’ll have to deduct it from your salary.” But Dana never took it seriously. She would laugh and say, “What’s the big deal? It’s only ten minutes.” One morning, she woke up late as usual. Because she was in such a rush, she forgot her laptop at home. She had to drive back to get it, making her even later. When she finally arrived at the office, she discovered there was an important meeting where she was supposed to present the project. Her manager had no choice but to give the presentation to another employee. At the end of the month, part of Dana’s salary was deducted, and she also missed out on a salary raise. She walked out of the manager’s office upset, complaining, “They treated me so unfairly.” Her coworker smiled and said, “Well… the one who did it to herself, may she get even more of it.” Dana was the one who kept procrastinating and ignoring the warnings, so in the end, she paid the price for her own actions. Meaning of the proverb “The one who did it to themselves, may they get even more of it” is a sarcastic Palestinian–Jordanian expression used when someone ends up in trouble because of their own choices or behavior. It means they brought the problem upon themselves, so they have to live with the consequences. It carries a meaning similar to the English idea of “You made your bed, now lie in it,” or the Arabic proverb “The hen scratched dirt onto its own head,” referring to someone whose own actions caused their misfortune.
