“The One Who Eats for Himself Is the One Who Benefits” (Palestinian–Jordanian dialect proverb) There was a large company that offered a free training course to its employees every year. Anyone who joined had all the costs covered by the company, and at the end, they received a certificate that could help them earn a raise or find a better job in the future. There was an employee named Moayad. His manager told him several times, “Sign up for the course. It’s an opportunity you shouldn’t miss.” But every time, Moayad replied, “Maybe later… I’m not in a hurry.” One of his coworkers told him, “Even if it takes a little effort, it’s for your own benefit.” He laughed and said, “If it’s meant to be good for me, it’ll come back to me on its own.” Months passed, and the course ended. A while later, the company announced a new position with a higher salary. Moayad applied and was sure he’d get it because he’d been with the company longer than the others. Instead, the position went to his coworker—the one who had taken the course and invested in improving himself. Moayad was disappointed and asked, “I’ve worked here for years… why wasn’t I chosen?” The manager calmly replied, “We gave everyone the same opportunity. The one who took advantage of it was the one who benefited.” After work, Moayad was sitting alone, feeling upset. An older employee walked by and said, “Son… the one who eats for himself is the one who benefits himself.” Then he added, “We can advise you, encourage you, and open doors for you. But in the end, you’re the one who has to look after your own future and work on yourself. No one will care about your future more than you do.” Moayad stayed silent. He realized the opportunity had been right in front of him—but he was the one who let it slip away. From that day on, he became the first to sign up for any course or opportunity that could help him, because he understood that if he didn’t invest in himself, no one else would do it for him. Meaning of the proverb “The one who eats for himself is the one who benefits himself” is a proverb used to encourage someone to take care of their own interests and not miss valuable opportunities. It can be said when someone refuses something that would benefit them—whether it’s food, medical treatment, education, or any advice that’s in their best interest. The proverb is not limited to food. Its message is that the greatest beneficiary of taking care of yourself is you, because no one will care about your well-being, future, or success more than you do.
