‫الرجل والافعى ناكرة الجميل‬

يُحكى أن رجلًا كان يتجوّل على أطراف الغابة، فوجد أفعى تستغيث وقد سقط عليها حجر.
فأنقذها الرجل، وعندما أنقذها قالت له الأفعى: "لقد أقسمت أن ألدغ كل من يساعدني".
فقال لها الرجل: "لقد ساعدتك، فكيف تريدين أن تلدغيني؟"
فأجابته الأفعى: "سألدغك".

فقال لها الرجل: "دعينا نسأل ثلاث حيوانات ممّن نجدهم في طريقنا، فإن أعطوكِ الحق في لدغي فافعلي".

مضوا قليلًا حتى التقوا بالبقرة، فحكوا لها القصة كاملة، فأجابت:
"رغم ما أمنحه من الحليب للإنسان، ينكر فضلي، وفي النهاية يذبحني.
لا ترحميه… الدغيه."

استمروا في المشي حتى وجدوا حمارًا، فسألوه، فأجاب:
"رغم أنني أخدم الإنسان وأحمل له الأثقال، يقسو عليّ ويضربني ويستهزئ بي.
لا تشفقي عليه… الدغيه."

واصلوا السير حتى التقوا بالذئب، فسألوه، فقال:
"لن أصدقكم حتى تعيدوا تمثيل المشهد أمامي."

تمددت الأفعى، فوضع الرجل عليها الصخرة وقال للذئب: "هكذا وجدتها".
فقال له الذئب: "اتركها كما وجدتها تحت الحجر…
فإن ناكر الجميل لا يستحق المساعدة."

It is said that a man was walking along the edge of a forest, when he found a snake crying for help, trapped under a heavy stone.
The man rescued the snake, and once he freed her, she said:
“I have sworn to bite anyone who helps me.”

The man replied:
“But I just helped you. How can you want to bite me now?”

The snake answered:
“I will still bite you.”

So the man said:
“Let us ask three animals we meet on our way. If they give you the right to bite me, then do it.”

They walked a little until they met a cow. They told her the whole story, and she said:
“Even though I give humans my milk, they deny my favor and, in the end, they slaughter me.
Do not have mercy on him… bite him.”

They continued walking until they found a donkey. They asked him, and he replied:
“Even though I serve humans and carry their burdens, they are harsh with me, beat me, and mock me.
Do not pity him… bite him.”

They went on until they met a wolf. They asked him, and he said:
“I will not believe you until you reenact what happened in front of me.”

The snake lay down on the ground, and the man placed the stone back on top of her and said to the wolf:
“This is how I found her.”

The wolf then said:
“Leave her exactly as you found her, under the stone…
For one who is ungrateful for kindness does not deserve help.”
